N’dritë | In the light: Collaboration of Security Files Authority with IIPP, Harabel and MEMO

Saturday 18 August 2018 by en

This August 23rd, at the former concentration camp in Tepelena, HARABEL will cure the presentation of three very important art pieces: “Even Walls Have Ears” by Alketa Xhafa Mripa and “As If Mother” & “We Belong to Each Other”, by Ema Andrea, Ervin Kotori, Gjon Radovani and Agron Tufa.

The performances will be followed by a music concert by "Asgjë Sikur Dielli and "3 Mosketieret" as a celebration of life over pain and death imposed by the former Albanian communist regime. This will be our most challenging contemporary art presentation so far, inside of a former concentration camp firstly open for the wide public, discerning our historical memory of brutal mental and physical pain, of fear and absence of freedom; on an August sunny day, as life slowly progresses towards acceptance and forgiveness, towards light.

The history of the camp

In the former internment camp no. 6 in Tepelena hundreds of people lost their lives.

The origins of the museum complex is marked by two barracks built by the Italian fascist army in 1939. The barracks served as the military base for the fascist army in the Italian-Greek war. After the end of World War II and the installation of the communist dictatorship in Albania, this military unit was converted into a concentration camp in 1949 and served as such until 1953.

From 1953 to 1990 it served as a military unit for the army of the People’s Republic of Albania and after 1990 this complex lost its function.

According to testimonies, approximately 300 minorslost their lives in this camp, mostly from starvation and ill-treatment. These children ended up in this brutal internment center with the only "guilt" of being the children or grandchildren of parents, grandparents and cousins, who for the Regime were categorized as political enemies.

These children were also deprived of the right to have a grave, they were burried on the river banks, so that the river waters would flush away the remains, thus eradicating the traces of this ghastly massacre.
